I’m Chloe, a visual artist and with an obsession towards the haptic and the sensorial. I came to the fragrance hobby in my 30’s partly as a method of coping with chronic illness by creating a protective bubble of fragrance around me, keeping the effluvia of strangers at bay. The title of this blog comes from a 1936 book by the same name, a comedy of errors by the English novelist Barbara Pym. Pym has been a considerable influence on my practice in how much biography, how much the place, class and history of her characters is contained in and shown by their material objects. I too, am interested in using the material to create narratives. Like the ‘excellent women’ in her stories, I trawl the secondhand sales, but in search of perfume, clothing and kitsch rather than Victoriana.
